Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner
Tanisha Pryor

Tanisha Pryor, MSN, PMHNP, is a dedicated and compassionate Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner with over 12 years of experience in nursing. She began her academic journey at Piedmont Virginia Community College, earning her Associate Degree in Nursing. She went on to complete her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at James Madison University and, most recently, earned her Master of Science in Nursing from Walden University.

Her clinical background spans a wide range of healthcare settings, including oncology med-surg, hospice care, cardiovascular units, care coordination, and case management. She also spent three years serving as a correctional nurse and two years as a behavioral health case manager, supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Tanisha trained in inpatient psychiatric care at Sentara Rockingham Memorial Hospital, focusing on adult populations. She gained experience in medication management and diagnostic assessments at Valley Community Service Board and worked in substance abuse treatment settings.

Tanisha has experience working with adolescents and adults across all age groups, which has allowed her to develop a deep understanding of the unique challenges faced at different stages of life. Her clinical background includes diagnosing and treating a broad spectrum of mental health conditions, including anxiety disorders, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), bipolar disorder, and substance use disorders. She is also skilled in managing complex cases involving co-occurring conditions and personality disorders.

Her training and practice have equipped her to work with individuals experiencing mood disorders, trauma-related conditions, psychotic disorders, and behavioral challenges. Tanisha’s therapeutic approach is rooted in evidence-based modalities such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), motivational interviewing, person-centered therapy, and psychodynamic therapy. She is passionate about creating a safe, supportive environment where clients feel empowered to explore their mental health and work toward meaningful healing and growth.

Her passion for mental health was sparked during her first undergraduate clinical rotation, and it has grown into a lifelong commitment to destigmatizing mental illness and promoting holistic wellness. She believes that mental health is foundational to overall well-being, often quoting, “If your mind isn’t healthy and intact, then you can’t care for yourself physically.” Her goal is to create a safe, supportive space where clients feel heard, respected, and empowered to thrive.

Born and raised in Charlottesville, Virginia, Tanisha is a proud mother of three and a devoted pet parent to her bull terrier, Mr. Kodak. Outside of her professional life, she enjoys traveling with loved ones, hiking scenic trails, shopping, bowling, and cheering on her children in basketball and football. Her favorite season is fall, and she especially cherishes Thanksgiving for the warmth and togetherness it brings.
