Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner
Sylvia May, DNP, FNP-C, PMHNP-BC, PMHNP-C

With nearly two decades of nursing experience and eight years as a Family Nurse Practitioner, I bring a comprehensive, thoughtful, and compassionate approach to mental health care. I specialize in working with adults and older adults experiencing anxiety, depression, academic stress, and work-related stress. My clinical approach integrates psychotherapy and psychiatric medication management, utilizing evidence-based modalities including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Person-Centered Therapy. Treatment is collaborative and patient-centered, ensuring care plans are tailored to each individual’s clinical needs and personal goals.

Throughout my career, I have prioritized building strong therapeutic relationships and delivering integrated care that supports both emotional and biological aspects of mental health. I provide thorough psychiatric evaluations, ongoing medication management, and therapeutic support within a respectful, nonjudgmental environment. My goal is to help clients feel understood, supported, and empowered while developing insight, resilience, and practical strategies for long-term emotional well-being.

I bring 19 years of nursing experience and eight years of advanced practice experience providing psychiatric care in primary care and outpatient clinical settings. My background includes the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of common mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, and stress-related disorders through both psychotherapy and psychopharmacologic interventions. I also have extensive experience with care coordination and referrals to specialty mental health services when clinically indicated, with a consistent focus on individualized outpatient care.

Currently, I practice in a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) clinic, where I support individuals with co-occurring cognitive, emotional, and behavioral health challenges. This role has reinforced my commitment to evidence-based medication management, interdisciplinary collaboration, and ongoing professional development in psychiatric and behavioral health care.

Outside of clinical work, I enjoy spending time with family, reading, and maintaining an active lifestyle. I value reflection, lifelong learning, and personal wellness, and I strive to integrate these principles into both my personal life and professional practice.
